How to Seek for Contentment

Find Contentment, Stop 'When and Then' Thinking by Rick Warren 

If God gives a man wealth and property … he should be grateful and enjoy what he has … it is a gift from God. Ecclesiastes 5:19 (GN) 

Learning to be content requires that you stop any “when and then” thinking –

• “When I am ___________, then I’ll be happy.”
• “When I have ___________, then I’ll be happy.”

(You fill in the blanks) 

The reason we fall into this trap is that we may actually be content for a little while but it won’t last. But, more than likely, someone else or something else will come along and drain the contentment from our lives. 

The Bible teaches that happiness isn’t getting what you want. Happiness is being happy with what you have. Look at all the things God has given you. 

Unfortunately, we often focus on what we don’t have and forget the many wonderful things we do have, not only material blessings, but far more important things, such as family and friends. 

A key to contentment is recognizing that you have the choice to be happy right now with the many things God has already given you. What are you waiting on to make you happy?

How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Today we will learn how we can stop comparing ourselves to others by being content with what we have and who we are as children of God. Hope you enjoy it and apply it to your life.

Be Content: Stop Comparing Yourself to Others by Rick Warren

“Do your own work well, and then you will have something to be proud of. But don’t compare yourself with others” Galatians 6:4 (CEV) 

The Bible says we should never compare our financial circumstances to others. For one thing, it undermines your ability to be grateful for what God has given you. It also leads you into discontentment because you will always find people who appear to be better off than you. 

Paul says such comparisons are foolish, “In all this comparing and grading and competing, they quite miss the point.” (2 Corinthians 10:12b MSG) One of the reasons Paul was used so greatly by God was that he refused to be distracted from his purpose by comparing himself with others.

What to do right now!

Ask God to show you ways that you compare yourself to others. Confess your comparisons and ask God to re-direct your heart toward contentment and gratitude.

How to be Content in All Circumstances

Be Content Whatever the Circumstances by Jon Walker 

 

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. Philippians 4:11 (NIV) 

The Bible teaches we can have contentment “whatever the circumstances”, when we stay close to Jesus (Philippians 4:11 NIV). 

The contentment we find in Jesus is greater than anything the world has to offer. Contentment with Jesus is a treasure beyond imagination. We need not be troubled or afraid when we look for our contentment in Jesus (John 14:27; 1 Timothy 6:6). 

Contentment comes as we listen to the Holy Spirit, learning that “the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17 NIV). 

We know these things to be true because Jesus told us. He wanted us to know so that we would be content in his peace (John 16:33).
